Thanksgiving Reflection

post by matt

Last night as I was laying awake in bed, coughing and sniffling and willing this cold to go away, I was reflecting on Thanksgiving and became a bit overwhelmed at how blessed my life has been. I am incredibly grateful to my family for the sacrifices they have made to make it possible for me to have the life I do in North America.

You see, 3 out of 4 of my grandparents were immigrants to Canada. All left their Eastern European countries to seek a better life for not only themselves, but also for their children, grandchildren and the many generations that would call this land their home. They left with nothing, traveled across an ocean and arrived in a country without knowing the language or customs or what the future held. My maternal grandfather met my grandmother (1st generation Canadian) and slowly they made their way west, having children and trying different job opportunities along the way until they ended up all the way on the other end of the country where they lived and provided for their 5 children until their children could provide for themselves. My mom was the only one of her siblings to go to University and have a career from her degree until she had her own children. My paternal grandparents were just married when my grandfather made the move to Western Canada and it took 5 years of hard work before it was even possible for my grandmother to join him! Once she got to Canada she had to survive Tuberculosis before having their 4 children. 3 of their children (my dad included) went to University and became successful in each of their fields.

So I’m thankful, and grateful and overwhelmed at the how blessed my life is, all because of the choices my grandparents made. They are all gone now, but their legacy lives on and will continue for generations because they were willing to work hard and make the sacrifices they knew were necessary for a better life.

This Thanksgiving Matt & I get to spend with both sets of parents, and we couldn’t be happier! We hope that you are feeling as blessed and loved as we do today!

Happy Thanksgiving.
